Route Mapping is playing an increasingly important role in creating a database for railway asset management. Mark Judd and Frank Leahy look at the instrumentation needed for measurement, sensor calibration, the algorithms used in the reduction of the spatial data and the integration of the spatial data acquired with large-scale aerial photography. They also offer insight to an intuitive interface for more detailed attribute information and consider the role laser scanning will play in the future
